As I have stated
before, the radio totally overkills today’s hits by mostly playing songs that
are released within the last year. Even if pop music is my favorite, hearing
these songs pretty much every day can get tiring and monotonous. I think it’s
important to mix up your music playlists by playing today’s hits and “oldies”
that
you used to listen to. I also believe that listening to oldies is a great
way to reminisce the good old days.
According to
Merriam-Webster, the definition of oldie is something that is old, especially
of a popular song of an earlier day. Typically, people think of oldies as songs
from previous decades such as the 60s, 70s, and 80s. While this is an official definition,
I have my own connotation of this term. I like to think of oldies as songs that
have not released within the last couple years. These songs can date from my
childhood to my early teen years. For instance, I’ll listen to current songs on
the radio most of the time. Sometimes, however, I’ll turn off the radio and
start jamming out to my old Hannah Montana CDs. Yes, at age 20, I’ll listen to music that I obsessed
over during my middle school years.
So why do I do this?
Sometimes if life is sucking at the current day, I like to forget about what’s
going on and reminisce about my grade school years by listening to my oldies. For
example, when I hear Hannah’s song Nobody’s
Perfect, I always remember the summer after seventh grade and going to my
friend’s house to watch the music video premiere on the Disney Channel. Another
example is when I hear Taylor Swift’s song Love
Story, I remember my freshman year of high school and the fact that this
was the first song I ever heard from her. It’s really fun remembering more fun
and simple times in your life. You can’t daydream too long though because you unfortunately
have to go back to reality.
So to my fellow
readers, do you ever take a break from listening to today’s music and grove to
your oldies? Do you have any memories that link to old songs that you used to listen
to in middle school and high school? I’m sure most of you avid music listeners
do.
Growing up my mother listened to a lot of music that today could be considered "prehistoric" but because of that i tend to listen to a lot of the "oldies" type of music. I love some of the older songs because in my own personal opinion they have better meanings. I really like music that has a point and I get that more from oldies than i do from pop music
ReplyDeleteI have to agree, my parents grew up in the 80's and I have to admit, some of their music (especially the dance music) is waaaaay better than some of the garbage I hear now-a-days on the radio. I would much rather listen to some oldies! I also agree that there's so much more meaning and understanding in majority of these songs. It's nice to hear about love and living life than money, girls, and drugs.
